I have been sailing about 20 years of which 7 years with my own sailboat. It has been a fun and giving experience with half of the time enjoying the sea and other half time fixing, upgrading and maintaining the boat. And I don't mean that fixing, upgrading and maintaining the boat had been negative side of the experience. I enjoy doing with my hands and learning new things. I love it so much that I have been living at the sailboat past 5 summers from May to October.
5 years ago I started reaching middle age within couple years and I start planning what I would like to do. Sailing is fun, but it's a summer hobby. I need something for winters since a have no interest of spending winter in sailboat. It would take couple months in worst weather to sail the boat to warm climate for winter. Spend there couple months and then couple months back to Finland in worst weather. I think after one winter in the boat I would had enough of sailing for a long while. So better to keep it as half of a year hobby and do something else during off season of sailing.
I believe that was the time when I got the idea of getting a recreational vehicle for winter hobbies. The first idea was to fly to USA and buy a used A class RV from there. Tour the US and then ship the RV to Finland. Then came Covid and stopped everything including my plans which afterwards was good thing. 20+ years old A class RV from USA would had been a bad choise from all the options.
Over the years I have watched 1000+ hours of recreatinal vehicle and van life videos from Youtube and was turning to van size vehicle and build the living area by myself. But vans are very limited what comes to the size of the living space inside the vehicle. No mather how big the van is there is hardly no standing space inside and same for stowage. It would be hard to enjoy the time spend in the van.
A year ago I found this RV genre who transforms used busses to RV. They are usually involved with drifting or other types of motor sports and they transport the sports car inside of the RV. A lots of space compared to van and the amount of stowage busses have. This would be my way to go with this idea of having RV for winter time hobbies.
